This unConference will feature keynote speakers to get you thinking about the economics of being female and how looking at the challenge from an economic view can positively impact your career. In true unConference fashion, it has no agenda until the participants create it. You will decide what topics will be discussed by pitching solutions to the crowd for further discussions in breakout groups. You will share ideas, problem solve, hear multiple perspectives, and challenge the status quo with creative solutions. There is great diversity and experience in the Boston area and this is wonderful opportunity for you to share expertise and exchange innovative ideas in a supportive environment. Katie Donovan is a pay equity consultant and speaker. Her company, Equal Pay Negotiations LLC, is dedicated to achieving equal pay by consulting for all the stakeholders: employees, employers, and policy makers. The consulting with individuals is to negotiate their pay and benefits. The consulting with employers and policy makers is to eliminate the unintended biases in the hiring, promotion, and review processes. Katie brings a unique and pragmatic perspective to the work due to her 360-degree background in employment, which includes account management at a staffing firm and an applicant-tracking developer, and as a managing director of a trade association. Ms. Donovan’s involvement on the women’s economic equality issues goes beyond her work. Ms. Donovan is a founding and steering committee member of the MA Equal Pay Coalition and a co-president of the MA branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She innovated banning salary history questions to close the gender pay gap. The recently signed Massachusetts Equal Pay Law is the first law in the nation to include such a provision. More than twenty states and municipalities are following Massachusetts’ lead with bills and executive orders to end the practice. Ms. Donovan speaks and conducts workshops on equal pay, salary negotiations, and unintended biases in hiring at such venues as Harvard Business School, NASDAQ, Women in Construction, SEUI Interns and Residents, Society of Women Engineers, and Mom Corps. She is a sought after commentator on pay equity and women in business by media including Mashable, BBC, SELF Magazine, Forbes, NPR, Huffington Post, and more. Ms. Donovan earned her MBA from McCallum School of Business, Bentley University in Waltham, MA and a BA in Economics from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Katie grew up in Chelsea, MA and has stayed close to her roots, as has her extended family. She loves Boston and its two best sports, Red Sox baseball and politics. When not working, she can be found enjoying Boston and Cape Cod with friends and family, practicing yoga, kayaking, and baking.
Dr. Elizabeth O'Day is the CEO and Founder of Olaris Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company that develops precision medicines for diseases with little to no treatment options and dismal survival rates. Olaris technology is a spin out from Dr. O’Day’s doctoral work at Harvard University. In a single experiment Olaris’s metabolite profiling platform can map nearly the entire human metabolome, which will fundamentally change how diseases are treated and diagnosed. Dr. O'Day is also the Founder of Lizzard Fashion, an apparel company that uses fashion to promote science. Like feedback loops studied by scientists, science inspires fashion and fashion supports science. Partial Lizzard proceeds support cancer research. Additionally, Dr. O'Day Founded Proyecto Chispa (Project Spark), a 501c3 non-profit that recycles electronics and uses the resale of parts to build computer centers in orphanages throughout the world. Through her work at Proyecto Chispa, Dr. O'Day was selected as the Greenovate Champion of the Year by the Mayor of Boston in 2015. She is also the Founder of "Women in Science & Technology" (WST) at Boston College. WST is in its 11th year and has provided hundreds of high-school-aged females and college students the opportunity to learn about careers in science. Dr. O’Day received her PhD from Harvard University, where she was a National Science Foundation fellow. She was one of eleven America scientists awarded a Winston Churchill fellowship and received a Master’s of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge. She has a Bachelors of Science degree from Boston College in Biochemistry. She was awarded nearly all of the nation’s top undergraduate research honors (Beckman scholar, Goldwater Scholar, Churchill Fellow, NSF Fellow, National Institute of Chemistry Excellence Award). Dr. O’Day is also a Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum and was an invited speaker as a “new champion to reboot healthcare” at the annual meeting in Davos in 2016. She was also a "nominated change maker" and invited to attend the first ever United State of Women Summit convened by the White House in 2016. TruTV in Beirut, Lebanon honored her as one of “the women of the year” in 2016. Dr. O'Day was also one of the biotech CEOs invited to attend VP Joe Biden's Cancer Moonshot Summit in DC to discuss collaborative ways “to end cancer as we know it”. She was also recently asked to join a global task-force with the top 25 leaders in biotech to provide guidelines for the future of biotechnology by the World Economic Forum. Most recently Dr. O’Day accepted an adjunct faculty position at her alma mater, Boston College.
Deborah Burkholder is Director at Institute for Career Transitions. Deborah is the chief architect of the ICT Collaboratory, an experiential research program exploring the future of work. Building on her experience and career in human resource management, talent acquisition and development, coaching, and systems design, she is a catalyst for creating continuous learning environments. Her impact is enhancing the use of talent in solving problems driving towards better societal, organizational, and economic outcomes for all.
